BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY

Miguel G. Villarreal-Cervantes, born in Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico, in 1980. He earned his bachelor’s degree with academic excellence in Electronic Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico de Veracruz in 2003. In parallel, completed a Technical Career in Computer Systems from 1998 to 2000 at the Centro de Computación Profesional de Golfo S. C. Later, he moved to Mexico City to pursue graduate studies at the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV-IPN), where he earned his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering in 2005 and 2010, respectively.

In 2010, he began his academic career as a full-time professor at the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria en Ingeniería y Tecnologías Avanzadas of IPN (UPIITA-IPN). In 2011, he joined the Centro de Innovación y Desarrollo Tecnológico en Cómputo of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CIDETEC-IPN), where he currently works as a full-time research professor.

In 2012, he received for the first time the award from the Mexican National Researchers System (S.N.I.I.) to belong as a member of the S.N.I.I. and he obtained an upper level "SNII level I" than the expected level "Candidate". From 2023 to 2027, he was promoted to Level II.

In the same year (2012), the Mexican Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation (SECIHTI) approved his first National Basic Research Project. Since 2011, he has also led institutional research projects at IPN. He has received the IPN Research Award three times: in 2015 in the category Research by Young Researchers, in 2019 in Applied Research, and in 2022 in Basic Research.

At CIDETEC-IPN, he chaired the Mechatronics Knowledge Generation Line from 2013 to 2016 and currently serves as the CIDETEC node head of IPN’s Expert Network on Robotics and Mechatronics. He was guest editor of the special issue “Metaheuristics for the Planning, Design and Control of Mechatronic Systems with Energy Efficiency in Engineering Applications” in the journal Energies (MDPI) from 2022 to 2023. Since 2023, he has been serving as guest editor of the International Journal of Dynamics and Control (Springer).

He chaired the 1st Meeting of the Mexican Network of Experts in Robotics and Mechatronics in 2012, co-chaired the International Congress on Technological Trends in Computing in 2015 and 2016, and co-chaired the International Conference on Soft Computing & Machine Intelligence in 2023 and 2025. He also served as an International Program Committee member for the International Conference on Soft Computing & Machine Intelligence (2024, 2025) and for the International Conference on Robotics, Computer Vision, and Intelligent Systems (2024, 2025).

He has participated as a member of several evaluation committees, including the Program of Performance Incentives for Researchers at IPN, Basic Scientific Research Projects of SECIHTI, and Postdoctoral Studies aimed at strengthening the National Quality Graduate Program. In addition, he regularly serves as a reviewer for scientific journals and books.

His research interests include mechatronic system optimization (mono and multi-objective optimization), nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms for developing optimal mechatronic systems, applications of computational intelligence in engineering, optimal controller tuning of mechatronic systems through metaheuristic optimization (offline and online optimization strategies) and robotics. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
